👻 To scare the stress out of us 🎃

In the evening of October 25, just as the sun was setting and darkness loomed over the school campus, 50-odd people convened in the secluded LT32 for no other reason than to scare the living daylights out of themselves (pun intended).

They had come to attend Pharma Movie Night – an event planned by the 5 house heads for all NUS Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences students to unwind – and the chosen movie was James Wan’s blockbuster horror film The Conjuring. With Halloween just around the corner, the house heads thought it would be the perfect film for the occasion. Indeed, it was!

At 6.15pm sharp, students enthusiastically filed into the lecture theatre. Despite the slight technical difficulties, (an ominous sign perhaps?), they waited patiently for the movie to begin. After a couple of minutes of panicked tinkering with the IT system and exasperated sighs from the house heads, the screen flickered to life.

As the film rolled, there was an eclectic mix of reactions from the crowd. Genuine screams and muffled gasps could be heard echoing through the room, mingled with playful yelps and laughter as students took the opportunity to spook their friends in the dimly lit lecture theatre.

The many chuckles and annoyed “Oi!”s and “Tsk!”s certainly helped to lighten the mood, making the movie seem less scary than it is.

At the end of the film, students reflected that they had really enjoyed the movie. Many shared that they had not watched the film since its release in cinemas over a decade ago, so their memories of its plot had faded with time.

For them, it was like watching the film for the first time and they rediscovered the appeal of the horror classic with their peers.

As they exited the lecture theatre, students clamoured for a second movie night; this time for The Conjuring 2!

Needless to say, Pharma Movie Night was more than just a screening; it was a night for students to come together, have fun, and forge lasting memories as they faced their fears side by side.
