IMH Visit

What’s it like to be an IMH Pharmacist? Students discern facts from myth.

On 8th July, a group of pharmacy and pharmaceutical science students visited the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for a site visit. Organised by PPAC, the aim of this visit was to learn more about the work and experiences of pharmacists in IMH.

Students were first greeted by Mr Franky, their trusty guide and one of the few pharmacists who specialises in health informatics. Participants gained insights during an engaging talk by experienced IMH pharmacists regarding the daily responsibilities of a pharmacist specialising in psychiatric medicine

Myth Debunked!

Did you know? Along with knowledge on psychiatric medicine, pharmacists are required to hold onto their knowledge about drugs for other general health conditions, as patients being treated for psychiatric conditions often have comorbidities that need to be considered as well.

The next segment was a Q&A session with some of the IMH pharmacists. The pharmacists eagerly let them in on their personal experiences, the good and the bad, which let students better understand what a day in the life of a pharmacist in IMH as well as the work-life balance.

Following that, the HR department shared regarding their scholarship benefits for pharmacy students.

To end off the visit, students gained an exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the pharmacies in IMH, to observe the inner workings of IMH’s pharmacies. Mr Franky also brought the students to his office to share more about what a career in health informatics as a pharmacist entails.

It’s not everyday you get this up close and personal with the experiences of IMH pharmacists considering how niche the profession is. If exclusive insights and deep dives into all kinds of pharmaceutical-related professions pique your interest, do make sure to keep PPAC on your radar.
