IPSF Student Exchange Programme

Here’s what you need to know about the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation’s (IPSF) Student Exchange Programme (SEP), from someone who has experienced it firsthand.

ICYMI, IPSF’s winter SEP is now accepting applications. The programme allows both pharmacy and  pharmaceutical science students to complete an internship overseas. Students would have to work for at least 40 hours in any of the following placements: research labs, industry or clinical, hospital, or community pharmacies.

If you’ve been craving an opportunity to experience pharmacy outside of our sunny island, this is your chance. Hurry though, because applications are closing on 27 October 2024.

For those on the fence, perhaps reading about one of our senior’s SEP experience can help you decide whether you want to sign up or not.

Here’s what Santosh shared with us during our interview. (Note that responses have been edited for clarity and readability)

1. Where did you go for your SEP?

I did my SEP in Adelaide, Australia. For IPSF exchange programmes, completing mods is not required. I spent my time working at a community pharmacy.

2. Why did you choose to go on an exchange program?

I wanted to broaden my horizons through experiencing pharmacy practice overseas.

3. What was your most memorable experience during the exchange?

My colleagues. They were all so nice and made me feel right at home. They even went out of their way to make me more comfortable by making me Australian dishes like fairy bread.

4. What is the most meaningful thing you learnt from this experience?

I have learnt how pharmacy practice can differ between countries as well as how to interact with patients from completely different backgrounds. I have been exposed to a different system of running a pharmacy and have learnt that among the differences, there is always one fundamental similarity: a patient’s health is always the priority.

5. Can you share some advice to your juniors looking to go on an exchange? Any tips for them when it comes to making the most out of the experience?

Your experience is defined by you; get involved and work towards contributing to the daily operations of the pharmacy. Be curious and ask questions. See if you can spot useful features or practices in their pharmacies which you can use to enhance pharmacy practice in Singapore.

Well, you’ve heard from Santosh. The IPSF SEP is a great opportunity for us students to venture out and expand our horizons. If you don’t have anything planned this winter, consider applying for this programme! Not only will you be able to learn more about pharm for the programme, but I’m sure it’ll definitely add colour to and enrich your university life.
