Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium (APPS)

In an international battle of pharmacists, Team Singapore exceeds expectations

On the 29th of July, Chiang Mai, Thailand became the rendezvous point of Asia Pacific’s most competent and willing Pharmacy students from student societies all over APAC.

At the Asia Pacific Pharmaceutical Symposium (APPS), the largest event held under the International Pharmaceutical Student’s Federation (IPSF), students got the chance to showcase their pharmacy expertise, attend engaging workshops and more!

Read on to find out the impressive (and somewhat unorthodox) strategies of Team Singapore that helped them outdo, outshine, outperform the competition.

What is APPs?

APPS consisted of a few competitions. They were:

  1. Patient Counselling Event (3rd Place)

  2. Industrial Skills Event (2nd Place)

  3. Clinical Skills Event

  4. Compounding Event

  5. Science Communication

  6. Poster Competition

  7. National Costume (3rd place)

In this 7 round circuit, Team Singapore managed to enter the top 5 in all of them except 1. Impressive feat! Here were some of the highlights

Clinical Skills Event

In this 3 stage elimination game, it consisted of a written quiz, an objective structured clinical examination and a jeopardy style game show.

During the OSCE, students were tasked to counsel a patient on using an insulin pen. Of course our students had no trouble with that.

The exciting part came during the jeopardy segment which was a quiz covering various conditions. The room sprang to life as participants gave it their all. Not the people actually playing, no, but the people in the audience, screaming! At the top of their lungs! The answers! While the rest of the competition took it seriously, jotting down notes to answer the question, Team Singapore clearly had the most fun.

National Costume Event

While every other country sent their most glamorous models up on stage to proudly don their national costume, Singapore sent a merlion.

No need for expensive dresses, makeup and all that sparkle and shine! Merlion. And evidently the audience loved it! We clinched third place. Just look at how happy our merlion looks with its tiara!

Jokes aside, I’m sure all of Team Singapore had a blast competing, experiencing new cultures and cuisines and forging international networks. If what you read interests you, keep a lookout, same time next year!
