AY24/25 Summer Beneficiary Activities
This summer, our RxFlag committee partnered with Life Community Services Society (LCSS) to serve underprivileged and vulnerable children.
Time spent volunteering is time well spent — and our RxFlag committee sure knows how to make the most of our summer break. To kick things off, they hosted a penpalship programme for Primary 2 and 3 students at LCSS Hougang. Once a week for 6 weeks, they wrote letters and engaged in fun interactive activities with the students. Each session ended with a sharing segment, where students were encouraged to read their letters aloud — a great way to build their confidence and communication skills.
That’s not all. RxFlag also hosted 3 other activities — group games, solar system model-building, and handicraft-making — for their beneficiaries this summer. These activities were hosted at LCSS Yishun, Hougang, and Sengkang.
During handicraft sessions, the children especially loved making origami as they wanted to fold their very own chatterbox, chicken, ninja star, and inflatable box.
So, why join RxFlag?
RxFlag offers a convenient and accessible platform for volunteering, eliminating the need to struggle with sourcing for external opportunities. This makes it easier to stay committed — whether during the school term or over the summer break. It’s also a great opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Plus, you might even make new friends along the way!
If you are unsure, most volunteering sessions aren’t very long, and there are many different types of volunteering. You get to explore and see what you enjoy or feel passionate about. You may worry that you do not have the "right" skills to engage certain groups of people. However, as long as you genuinely want to get to know them better and make friends with them, everything will be alright! It might be a bit scary or awkward at the start, but these feelings will disappear with more experience. You can also look at it as an opportunity to discover your strengths, connect with others, and grow in ways you may not expect. What truly matters is having the heart to serve and a willingness to learn. Every role, no matter how big or small, plays a part in making a difference.
RxFlag is not just about helping others; you can also gain a lot from it. For Shizuka, the head of RxFlag, the most meaningful gift that she received from volunteering was her interactions with the beneficiaries. Rather than seeing herself as someone there to “help” them, she focuses on making friends with the students and creating memories through activities.
