AY23/24 Summer Beneficiary Activities (SBA) & Long Term Engagement (LTE)

Why aren’t all kids like this…

This year, Flag made their holidays extra special by sharing fun and memorable moments with the kids from Life Community Services Society (LCSS) during two main events:

1. The Summer Beneficiary Activities and

2. Long Term Engagement!

No matter the era, I think we can all safely agree kids are a handful. Yet those who attended Flag this year came out of it feeling extra fulfilled coming out of it. Read on to find out why.

During the LTE session I went for, I was assisting the children with writing their letters and a lot of eraser dust was created in the process. I started to do some housekeeping and the kids I was helping noticed and followed suit.

LTE is a five week-long penpalship programme aimed at establishing deeper bonds with the LCSS children. Letters were exchanged between the volunteers and children's pen pals weekly with volunteers taking turns to visit the centres to guide the children in writing their letters. A final face-to-face session was conducted where the penpals had the opportunity to meet in person. The room was bustling with laughter as the pen pals played games, marking the end of the programme.

After one of the SBA sessions, the children gave us paper flowers that they had coloured to show their appreciation. It was really cute!! … Even though these SBA may only be a short few hours, seeing the children smiling and enjoying themselves during the activities made me feel fulfilled!

Summer Beneficiary Activities (SBA) are a series of ad-hoc engagement activities which included handicrafts-making , basic science lessons about the human heart where the children had the chance to make a handmade heart model, and a quiz show style game that incorporated pharmacy and pharmaceutical science knowledge to introduce our courses to the children.

Editor’s note: That’s a bit high level…

In the end…

Kids will be kids; mischievous, hyper, and exhausting to deal with. I’m sure participants had their fair share of that too, but it seems to me all of them came out of it ultimately fulfilled and glad they could put a smile on the faces of children.
