What these 25 lucky individuals got access to will surprise you. It’s not just a zoom sharing. No, it’s not just a bunch of confidential images and video. Surely, it’s not just another link to an internship application form.
Imagine what knowledge and advice you could gain from the real deal. Simply put, for many, they received groundbreaking advice to let them burst through the doors of the pharmaceutical industry.
By spending a day in the Merck office, what these individuals were exposed to was every good thing you could imagine from the term “experiential learning”.
Merck, NOT MSD AH
Merck is a multi-billion dollar Science and Tech company with a branch in healthcare. You may not have heard of them, but you’ve definitely seen them everywhere in your labs, that’s how important they are. The session started off with Merck giving a peek into the inner workings of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry through a comprehensive yet concise overview of what they do. Anybody who expresses even a bit of interest in industry would have found this experience beneficial for their career goals.
Tangential…bioreactor…fermentation-ator????
On a guided lab tour, participants were brought around something like a lab-museum, meant for Merck’s customers to try out their thingamabobs and thingamajigs before purchasing. Participants were fortunate enough to take a sneak peek into a GMP lab as well.
It was fun and interactive as Merck’s employees littered the sharing with food for thought. There was never a dull moment as participants got to know the names of various equipment and the reasoning behind SOPs. Who knows how they might apply these learnings in their future careers.

And how does that work? During the networking session, participants probed potential recruiters with their questions to discover things about the industry which may not have been found anywhere else.

Speakers from various departments were invited to share their experience working at Merck, what are its pros and how they got there. Many participants were exposed to new job functions, some they’ve never heard of. Chances are for some, it ignited the passion to dive deeper into the industry.
