Career Huddle for the Career-Muddled
Ever struggle with what to do and where to go after graduating? Not sure where to even begin to find answers, all the while cramming the (wrong) answers for upcoming CAs? Consider yourself career-muddled?
Fret not, for the SingHealth Career Huddle can guide you to navigate your career-muddle. In PPAC’s latest event, SingHealth was invited to the PPS Hub on 20th February to share about the pharmacy profession as well as career and sponsorship opportunities with SingHealth in a 2-hour sharing session.
40 years of experience before you
Between the invited pharmacists, there was a shared total of ~40 years of experience in the pharmacy profession across a whole range of specialisations and programmes. Ms Ng has worked at SGH for a total of 22 years and is a registered oncology specialist pharmacist. Ms Joey has transitioned from clinical to industry and back to clinical practice and has co-lead various initiatives. Ms Tan had recently graduated from NUS in 2023 – and provides a fresh perspective for us prospective students.
An enriching experience
The session started with a short sharing about a day in the life of a SingHealth Pharmacist by Ms Tan. Ms Tan works at the oncology pharmacy at NCCS – definitely not a run-of-the-mill setting! Afterwards, the session moved to its highlight – the fireside chat with the three esteemed guests and our own Mr Ang Wei Jie from Year 3 Pharmacy as the moderator for the discussion. The panel added a personal touch by sharing their motivations for continuing or even returning to clinical practice. They let participants in on the controversial truth about work-life balance in healthcare and manpower issues. The air was grounded yet charged as participants walked away with a clearer picture, no longer career-muddled.
An abudance of opportunities
Following the fireside chat was a sharing by Ms Grace Chia from the SingHealth Human Resources Department about sponsorship and career opportunities with SingHealth. The session drew to a close with a post-networking session where participants had free reign to connect and chit-chat with the guests. Rarely, has there ever been a scene as exciting as this. So many students and their future employers engaged in riveting conversation that is bound to make a difference.
The Pharmacy Profession Awareness Committee (PPAC) is the educational outreach arm of the NUS Pharmaceutical Society which aims to raise awareness about the roles and responsibilities of pharmacists in our community. Internally, they promote the Pharmacy profession among the students and expose them to various future career opportunities that they can explore during their undergraduate years. If you’re keen on participating on events like these and being less ‘career-muddled’, keep a look out on the NUSPS Telegram channel for announcements
