UROPS & Research Opportunities Sharing

Push the boundaries of science as early as year 2! That’s UROPS.

Following in their senior’s footsteps, participants find out how they can start preparing. Even year 1s!

I once heard from a senior who, after trying it in her poly days, swears to stay far far away from research. “To tread where nobody has even looked, how can one know what to find?” Research isn’t for everybody, and rightfully so. It takes a copious amount of grit and resilience to keep going even when your results turn up inconclusive.

But research is also exciting, dynamic and fresh. It’s a field made for the curious and ambitious. It’s to no surprise that so many interested participants turned to Acad’s UROPS sharing. By picking up tips their seniors have left behind, many participants have already begun their preparation for a plunge into research. Here’s what they had to say after the event:

“I have always known UROPS was demanding. However, hearing testimonials from members of our Pharmily was insightful on how to balance and the best time to do so within our 4 years of studies.” - Julian Tan, Y3, President of NUSPS

Following in their footsteps

UROPS is understandably demanding because it serves as a litmus test for whether one can commit seriously to research. Research? Do I need a PhD to lead a research project? Short answer: Yes, but turns out there's a way YOU can start NOW.

Push the boundaries of science even as a Y1

To make sure juniors aren’t caught off guard by the mod, seniors saved them the hassle of doing their research by offering great advice such as tips on the application procedures and how to balance it with the rest of the curriculum. Many participants, especially those new to the advice, found the sharing extremely useful to help them make an informed decision.

“Great speakers invited, be great if there were more speakers”

Raw and unfiltered

The information shared that night was coming straight from the participants who’ve experienced the ups AND downs of research. Rest assured, the speakers brought only their honest opinions without any sugar coating of the programme. It’s as real as it gets.

The speakers closed off with a Q&A to answer any remaining burning questions to ensure nobody’s concerns remain unaddressed. Questions were abundant by the audience, possibly due to the anonymity conferred by posting their queries on the Pigeonhole website. That meant it was more than likely anybody could have learnt something extra simply by listening in during the Q&A.

If you’re interested in research, or any field for that matter, the Acads committee often invites esteemed guests to spill secrets and share comprehensive reviews of their respective industries. So what are you waiting for? There’s valuable advice everywhere not to be missed!
