Know Your Medicines, Get It Right (KYMGIR) Returns!

The Essential Medicines’ Committee’s longrunning flagship event, KYMGIR, made its long-awaited return on the 16th of March! Bringing its plethora of essential services and activities to the residents at Ace The Place Community Club, EMed seeks to positively impact the elderly community staying in the North-West area of Singapore in collaboration with the North West Community Development Council. KYMGIR aims to enhance medication literacy and adherence amongst the elderly, especially those dealing with polypharmacy. The various activities at KYMGIR aim to do exactly that, to bridge the gap that the elderly face in understanding their medications.

This year, KYMGIR revolved around the condition of osteoporosis. Booths were set up in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Society of Singapore (PSS) and our very own student volunteers.

The booths aimed to educate the elderly with a risk of developing osteoporosis, which was perfectly complemented by concurrent talks led by pharmacists and physiotherapists. Furthermore, in a unique collaboration with Temasek Polytechnic’s Food Interest Group, the elderly were able to learn how best to modify their diet to prevent osteoporosis.

Gaining real world consulting experience.

Of course, what KYMGIR event would be complete without pharmacists? Present at the event were pharmacists, who were there to perform medication reviews for the elderly participants, in a bid to provide personalised advice to demystify their medication routines. It was a fun and interactive opportunity for our student volunteers listening in as they were showed how to come up with treatment plans for complex patients.

Not only could they shadow the best of the best, but they also played an important supporting role. No experience whatsoever needed. Whether you’re year 1 or graduating, everyone had something to do which would definitely let you pick up a thing or two.

Ok, what’s next?

While the theme for this run of KYMGIR was centred around osteoporosis, the health theme changes annually, so be sure to catch future KYMGIR events for the chronic diseases you would like to dive into.
